Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Since her father's death, the Ford family was taken care of by her mother, grandmother as well as godparents. While a small child, Ford battled anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder caused through word-related associations. Ford began to be attracted to acting at the age of teenager and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted to the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After just a month, she decided that it wasn't for her. Ford decided to apply for the Central School of Speech and Drama, finally winning the position on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. Shaun Dingwall was later to play regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut when she appeared on Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in the year 1991. Ford took the professional title of Catherine Tate. Tate made her television debut in 1991, appearing on shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. The regular theatre work she performed led her to join the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up humor that she started adding to her show in the year 1996, was soon gaining the attention of her peers.
